Munch's Oddysee is the third game to be developed by Oddworld Inhabitants, but the second game in the Oddworld Quintology. Originally intended for the PlayStation 2, Munch's Oddysee switched to Xbox exclusivity half way through development in favour of its enhanced graphics, fluent programming, and launch title status (among other factors). Munch's Oddysee is the first Oddworld game to move away from the traditional 2D side scroller, to the world of 3D 360 degree movement. The game follows on from where Abe's Exoddus left off.
The game introduces many new characters, most notably Munch, a Gabbit, and the latest addition to the heroes of the Quintology. Captured by Vykkers while searching for others of his kind, Munch is made aware of his grim reality. Now the last of his species due to the high demand of Gabbit lungs (which make good Glukkon transplants) and the delicacy of Gabbit eggs (Gabbiar), Munch escapes with the aid of Fuzzles, the vengeful Vykker lab-rats. Teaming up with Abe under the guidance of the Almighty Raisin, both unlikely heroes set out to restore the Gabbit race, rescue Fuzzles, and free oppressed Mudokons, both born and unborn. Ultimately, their journey leads them back to where it began, Vykkers Labs. As it happens, the last can of Gabbiar, and coincidentally, the last chance for Munch to restore his race, is being auctioned onboard. By exploiting a dim-whit Glukkon, the duo race against the clock to earn enough moolah, and win the Gabbiar.
Munch's Oddysee introduces us to the wonderful world of 3D gaming. Gone are the days of dodging meat saws and jumping over pot holes. Puzzles are now in full 3D, and require a completely different type of strategy to conquer them. Most notable is the addition of aquatic environments. With life like water effects, Munch swims fluently through the many aquatic regions, but acts like a fish out of water when forced to trek on land. Abe on the other hand, is extremely agile on terra-firma, but can't swim at all. This gameplay technique offers the greatest diversity in strategy from previous games. Emersed in a world of beautiful visuals, with lush environments, and new creatures, Munch's Oddysee offers yet another unique Oddworld game.
