Stranger's Wrath is the fourth game to be developed by Oddworld Inhabitants. Originally titled Stranger, the name was changed to avoid copyright conflicts. In a bold and daring move, Oddworld Inhabitants have opted to ditch the Quintology for the time being, and focus their attention on exploring other parts of Oddworld. While the game will still take place on the same timeline as the previous three games, it will uncover completely new characters, environments, creatures, and more, even though unfolding on the familiar continent of Mudos.
Further straying from the traditional puzzle based Oddworld games of Abe and Munch past, Stranger's Wrath incorporates a first person shooter style of gameplay, to be used when he fetches his custom made double barrel crossbow. Further differing, is the fact that Stranger will no longer be the scrawny bottom of the food chain schmuck Oddworld has come to know as its heroes. Instead, Stranger will be a stern and strong character (described as being "half horse, half gorilla"), one that commands the top of the food chain. He will, however, be battling a severe emotional battle of some sort within himself, one that could leave him vulnerable. The game will take place on an array of varying landscapes, from western styled desert towns, dense forests and rocky plateaus to snow topped mountains reminiscent of the Himalayas.
Apart from the distinct shift in setting, the method of gameplay has changed too. Playing as Stranger, you have a choice of first or third person action. In third person, you'll have at your disposal a range of fast paced melee attacks and the ability to ram objects at 45 miles per hour, causing devasting effects. In first person, you'll be able to control his crossbow to attack enemies, or solve puzzles. Strictly against using conventional bullets, Stranger opts to use nature, in a most unnatural manner. With eight types of ammunition, and upgrades aplenty, living creatures known as Live Ammo are at your every whim. Use a Bolamite to immobilise, a Fuzzle as a living proximity mine, a Thudslug to knock out enemies, and more, including Zappflies, Chippunkz, Stunkz, Boombats and Stingbees. By utilising the double barrel crossbow, Stranger can effectively use many different combinations of Live Ammo to ingeniously outwit enemies.
Stranger's Wrath will only be released on the Xbox, as the PlayStation 2 version was dropped after technical constraits would have forced the release date to be postponed half a year later. This is the first Oddworld Inhabitants' game to be published by EA Games.
